Tuesday 14th January 2020
I woke up at 2.55am on Tuesday 14th to discover I was in quite a bit of discomfort with contractions. I was debating whether or not to wake Daddy but decided to leave it just in case they didn’t come to anything and because they weren’t yet bad enough that I couldn’t cope on my own or without pain relief. I tried to go back to sleep but struggled as I was excited and couldn’t stop thinking about meeting you. But sadly the contractions went away AGAIN! Finally, at 6.30am I got up and had cuddles with Daddy before he went to work.
Thursday – your day ❤️
I woke up at roughly 2.30am having been restless for a few hours with Braxtons. I did my usual tricks to ease them; used the loo and drank water. I also went downstairs to sleep on the sofa and take a couple of Rennies for heartburn. But instead of going away, the Braxtons got stronger and more intense. I remember lying there thinking “Typical – he’s decided to finally come, the day before he’s induced!”
5.05am currently sat in the bath eating honey hoops. Contractions coming every 5 mins or so. Daddy is busy packing snacks!

Well Alfie, we did it! I can’t quite believe that you’re here and you’re ours and we actually got through the birth in the way that we did. You were born today at 11.36am. It was a water birth, and towards the end it just got so painful I started to doubt whether I could do it. But despite your big head, I somehow managed to push you out with very little damage. My waters had to be broken, but apart from that, you did it all in your own lovely time. Right now I am feeding you and in between feeds, I love cuddling you on my shoulder, with your beautiful head bobbing around next to mine. You are already so alert and responding to my and Daddy’s voice. Tonight you were visited by both Grandmas and Grandads and your brother and sister who were all besotted with you.

Our first night together, just you and I, will always be a special memory, though it wasn’t an easy night. You seemed to have taken to breastfeeding well, but it was relentless and I couldn’t get you to settle at all. Eventually, at about 4 in the morning on the Friday, one of the midwives took you out for a couple of hours so that Mummy could rest. When you returned, the feeding saga continued until Daddy arrived just after 8 and took you for cuddles in the lounge, along with another Daddy. He said it was like “Daddy Daycare!”
Grandma and Grandad came to visit again before heading back to Wiltshire. We had lunch altogether in the lounge and then we got everything packed up ready to bring you home forever. We couldn’t wait!
Welcome to the world, Alfie Leask.
